How to Choose the Best Security System for Your Small Business

Small business security is no laughing matter. Every year, countless companies feel the effects of both internal and external theft resulting in diminished revenue. Fortunately, technology has greatly improved security capabilities, offering more options than ever. To effectively enhance the security of your small business, you must choose the best business security system that fits your specific needs.

The Importance of Business Security

Businesses that skimp on security are setting themselves up for problems. It’s not a matter of if, but when, it will happen. An article on Forbes even states that, “United States retailers lost $60 Billion in 2015 to shrinkage, which was up from $57 Billion in 2014.” Furthermore, they explained that employee theft was the primary reason for this loss.

An infographic from United Locksmith offers some additional statistics. According to their research:

  • 75 percent of employees have stolen at least once from their employer
  • 37.5 percent have stolen at least twice
  • 7 percent of annual revenue is lost to theft or fraud

If you haven’t invested in an effective security system, it’s advisable that you promptly do so.

How Do I Choose the Best Security System?

The first thing to consider is your budget. In most cases, you can purchase a quality, four-camera system for under $1,000, which should be sufficient when there’s minimal store space. This may also include features like door alarms, motion sensors, and a siren. If you need more cameras (12+), then you can expect to pay around $2,000.

These won’t necessarily have a lot of extra bells and whistles but should get the job done. Basic security needs for your small business will typically fall into a price range within $1,000-$2,000.

Wi-Fi Compatibility

In the past, small businesses often had to deal with cumbersome cords and cables for connecting a security system. Today, you’re much better off going with a product that uses Wi-Fi. Not only does it reduce cords, it should offer solid video quality as well.

Recording Resolution

It’s extremely important that you pick a security system that offers adequate resolution for the needs of your business. Your options will typically range anywhere from 420 lines of resolution all the way up to 1080p.

If your store space is fairly small and you only need to monitor a single area within 50 feet, then there’s a good chance that 420 lines will work. If you need to view areas from further away than 50 feet, you’ll want to have at least 700 lines of resolution.

Also, consider whether or not you need to record at nighttime or in dark areas. If so, you’ll want to go with a product that offers infrared LEDs.

Ongoing Fees

Before committing to a security system, clarify the company’s policies regarding ongoing fees. For instance, you may be charged monitoring fees, maintenance fees and customer service fees. Be sure that you find something that suits your needs but doesn’t have a lot of unnecessary fees.

A small business security system is a smart investment and serves multiple purposes. Besides providing video footage at your disposal in the event of a crime, it can be a great deterrent and prevent theft from ever happening in the first place.
